The 2010 Golden Globes: Hits & Misses

The Golden Globes' red carpet was rather boring last night. Maybe because it was raining on Hollywood. Maybe because everyone was thinking how pointless awards shows are in the face of the current crisis in Haiti. Whatever the reasoning, we saw a lot of black last night and even though we love black, we wanted to see more colour.
We deserved some colour after some of the shit movies Hollywood gave us this year.

The biggest trend on the red carpet, other than black, was Ruffles. They were everywhere and some women got them right. Most got them wrong.

This Hits:

One of the best last night: Julia Roberts.
She wore a simple, short YSL dress but accompanied it with major glow. She looked stunning and so happy.

Maybe she’s knocked up again.

Emily Blunt: a great colour, great silhouette and the ruffles were just right.
Now, if she would just smile a bit more, perhaps the media would warm up to her. She always wears this bitchy expression on her face.
Designer: Dolce & Gabbana

Sandra Bullock in Bottega Veneta: the colour was glorious!

The best black dress: Lanvin worn by January Jones
The dress itself is cut beautifully and the ruffle around the neckline works.
Unfortunately, January wasn’t a perfect 10 last night because of that unfortunate headband choice. It wasn’t necessary and overpowered her overall look.

Another gorgeous Lanvin dress on Rose Byrne.

She looked very old Hollywood glam last night. The little hair clip was a nice touch with the soft waves in her hair. Very Veronice Lake.
When are celebs EVER going to realize that going old Hollywood is the best thing you can do when you’re clueless about fashion?

Pulling off the short dress on the red carpet is never easy but Ginnifer Goodwin did it last night.
Here she is in a cobalt blue Vionnet dress. STUNNING.

And so is her face. Her skin is like a baby’s bottom!

Carrey Mulligan in a navy blue Nina Ricci.
Love her! Major crush on Carrey these days. She looks gorgeous with her little pixie cut.

Sookie Stackhouse in Stella McCartney
Gold was another big trend last night and surprisingly, a lot of people got the look down right. Anna Paquin is one of them.

The other great Gold look: Toni Collette in Elie Saab.

She was also wearing some serious diamonds—yummy!
Fashion Autopsy wants to know if Toni would be our BFF. We love our Toni!!!

Cameron Diaz typically disappoints on the red carpet. However, she did it right last night in probably one of the hardest colours to pull off: RED!
The cut is very 1930’s glam.
Designer: Alexander McQueen

Awhile back, we posted the ‘dos & donts’ of the red dress. Cameron is a ‘Do’ because she chose a simple silhouette and didn’t show too much skin. Also, she chose very simple accessories which is key to wearing a red dress well.

Julianne get’s it right, every year. She’s fabulous.
Designer: Balenciaga

AND her face is the best accessory. She’s just ridiculously stunning. It’s not fair.

Surprise of the night: Christina Aguilera showered.
She looked lovely last night. The hair, the dress, the makeup—everything. As close to perfection as she will ever get, most likely.
Designer: Versace

The Misses:

It pains me to do this. I wanted her to be on the ‘hit list’ but Christina Hendricks looked like she was going to the prom last night. All the wrong ruffles in all the wrong places.
Her hair and makeup looked great, though. She’s gorgeous.
Designer responsible for this big, peach mess: Christian Siriano

Kristen Bell = zzzzzzzzzzzzz
She’s on her way to becoming the Jennifer Aniston of Hollywood: boring and predictable.
Designer: Jasmine Di Milo

Putting Mariah Carey on the ‘hit list’ was a long shot but I really did think she would step it up this year since she’s had great reviews of her performance in Precious.
Here she is, hanging out on the red carpet. Literally.
The sad part is, she was close. Move the neckline up and lose the Mystic Tan & greasy skin and she could almost pass as a ‘Hit’. Let’s stress almost.
Designer: Herve Leger by Max Azria

Heidi Klum: a gorgeous woman in a tragic dress. Makes her look old and frumpy and we all know, Heidi is anything but. The ruffles did her in. And the colour didn't help.
Designer: Roberto Cavalli

Halle Berry in some skimpy black dress by some designer I don’t even care to Google. Halle rarely get’s it right. She seems to lose herself when it comes to the red carpet. She dresses well on her own so I don’t understand what happens to her when she decides to buy a gown.
She has great tits, though.

Kate Hudson looked like a bride last night. She’s yet another gorgeous woman who has pretty good personal style but all hell breaks loose on the red carpet.
If she has a stylist, she should fire him/her immediately.
Designer: Marchesa

Jennifer Morrison in Louis Antonia.
Ruffles, ruffles and more ruffles. The colour is terrible on her, too. Just bad from head to toe.

Tea Leoni giving up on the red carpet, entirely.
What’s with the pearl lariat? Bleh. She can do better that.
I’m talking about her outfit and her husband.

Rita Wilson: a flowery mess

Finally, Chloe Sevigny. When she claimed her award last night, Twitter was a flutter with some VERY negative comments about her dress and her attitude. Maybe it was because the Gleeks wanted Jane Lynch to win so they took their frustrations out on poor Chloe?
Again, ruffles! Oy!
The dress is very flowing and the colour is soft and lovely. Chloe is kind of in the middle. She’s not exactly a ‘Miss’ per se but she’s definitely not a ‘Hit’ in this one.
Designer: Valentino

However, for the GG after party, she wore a very yummy black dress by Christian Lacroix.
Perhaps this one should have been her red carpet choice.
Do you forgive her for the ruffles yet? We do.

It was funny to see some of the red carpet headlines today. For instance, one website called their red carpet re-cap ‘Wet & Wild’. Yes, the red carpet was ‘wet’ but it was hardly ‘wild’.

The 2009 Golden Globe's Best & Worst

So, the Golden Globes are almost here.  I sometimes tune in and I sometimes don't.  It's not like the GG's are the Oscars.  For the Oscars I never miss.

Since Fashion Autopsy has decided to do some live blogging on Sunday night, let's look back at last year's hits and misses.

This Hits:

Christina Hendricks looking juicy and gorgeous!  This Mad Men star is hot, hot, hot--even in simple black.

Olivia Wilde in Reema Acra.  The dress is lovely.  The hair looks like ass--she should have styled it instead of just rolling out of bed.

The tattoes are unfortunate but the rest is perfection. She's ridiculous.

I love everything about Mary-Louise Parker.  This Carlos Miele gown is the perfect cut and colour for her.  There was so much black last year, it was refreshing to see cobalt blue.

The Misses:
(there were PLENTY of misses)

Renee Zellweger: a f*cking mess, from head to toe
Designer: Carolina Herrera
Hairstylist: someone out for revenge

Sigourney Weaver: frumpy and boring.  She's been doing this for how many years?  She should know better.
Designer: Donna Karan

JLo: when a bad dress happens to a beautiful woman.  It's a sin, really.
Designer responsible for this gold disaster: Marchesa

Drew Barrymore: hating herself for the colour choice and taking it out on her hair
Designer: Dior
Hair: Magic Cuts and vodka

Glenn Close: giving up on fashion entirely
Designer: do you really give a sh*t?

We want to see some colour in 2010!

St. John Dumps Angie

Apparently, Angelina Jolie 'overshadowed' the St. John brand.
Uh, really?  It took the brand three years to figure this out.

Here's a statement from the CEO:
"[Jolie] overshadowed the brand," said chief executive officer Glenn McMahon. "We wanted to make a clean break from actresses and steer away from blondes and cleanse the palette.
"We needed to show a modern point of view of St. John," McMahon added. "We have evolved."
"We wanted to make a clean break from actresses and steer away from blondes and cleanse the palette," he added.

Now, they're on to redheads as Angie has been replaced with someone who happens to be married to some Rock Star (shocking!  A model is married to a Rock Star?!?!?)  Whatever.
Like many luxury brands, St. John is trying to stay relevant.  Fashion Retail ain't easy, kids!

Well, we can still enjoy Angie's gorgeousness--thanks to the wonders of the internet!
Below are some of her best St. John pimping...I mean, ad campaigns:

She looks a bit stunned here but the look is very Eva Peron

Perhaps she's writing her 'to do' list.   Don't we all look like this when we're writing our grocery list?

'How does this thing work?'

'I'm mysterious and irresistable. And the lips are real, thank you very much.'

'Man, I'm fucking hot!'

'I think I'll wear these gloves to bed tonite.  Meow!'

'Even dogs want to do me.'

'This isn't champagne in my glass, is it?  I'm breastfeeding the Mongolian triplets I just adopted, you morons!!'

Gee, I wonder whatever made them think she was overshadowing the brand.
*eyes rolling*

The Classics

To say fashion trends come and go quickly, is like saying the Pope is a little Catholic.
It’s not easy to stay on trend but it is easy to keep things fresh each season, even if you’re not participating in the latest (and sometimes stupid) trends.
How?
Keep those classic pieces.
And what is considered a ‘classic’ piece of clothing?
Something that looks good on you, no matter what the current trends are. Something that makes you feel like ‘you’ when you wear it. Something that makes you feel happy and confident. And more importantly, something that can mix well and support any trend that pops up.

The Classics:

1. The Little Black Dress: it’s pretty difficult to fuck up a black dress. Most of us look good in them,  provided the cut is right for our bodies. Don’t throw out your Little Black Dresses—you’ll always get use out of them as they are the best ‘go to’ dress when you’re in a bind.

The best way to update your LBD for 2010? Add a Statement Necklace

This one is from Lanvin but don't worry, there are many affordable alternatives out there like this one below from Forever 21:
Price: $25.00

2. Silk Scarves: if you’re one of the lucky gals that have Hermes scarves, don’t you EVER, EVER get rid of those little gems. (In my next blog, I’m going to demonstrate the many ways of wearing a scarf—you’ll be amazed at what you can do with them!)

3. The Trench Coat: this one won’t go out of style if you have one in a neutral colour. If you have one in herringbone or a floral print, you should hang on to those as well, if you’ve spent a lot on them. Those patterns/prints tend to pop back into fashion every couple of years.

The Burberry Trench, Spring 2010

4. Denim: a simple, bootcut or straight leg jean in a dark wash will never go out of style. Make sure the length is right for the type of shoe you’re wearing. I usually buy two pairs of jeans if I really like them so that I can wear them with my heels and my flats.

5. The Knee-length Skirt: never underestimate a well-made knee-length skirt. They will last you forever—especially if you have them in neutral colours. The pencil skirt is also becoming somewhat of a classic.

Badgley Mischka, Spring 2010

6. The Urban Shoe Myth: there’s a reason why Carrie went wild over the Manolo Blahnik Mary Janes: they are stylish & gorgeous and will work with just about anything in your closet.

I love the leopard ones. (Yes! Animal prints in small doses are always appropriate and classy)

7. The White Shirt: take care of your white shirts and they’ll last a lot longer. No matter what your age is, you can pull-off the white shirt. Pair it with jeans or your power suit and everything else in between and it adds freshness—immediately.
Spring 2010 update for the White Shirt a la Prada.  I love that they made the white shirt feel unpredictable.

8. The Wide-Leg Trouser: Again, in a neutral colour and a good quality fabric, you can have your wide leg trousers forever. Sometimes they disappear from trends but only for a short time. Guaranteed: at least every other season, you’ll be able to wear your wide leg trousers.

Spring 2010 update for the Wide Leg Trouser: White!
 Celine RTW

9. The Little Black Suit: If you invest in a well-made suit that isn’t overly trendy, you will certainly be able to wear it forever and it will always look hot. Just make sure to take care of it. Black can fade so try to keep it as clean as possible so you don’t have to keep having it dry cleaned. Also, keep it covered in a garment bag to avoid the light, which can fade the fabric quickly.
Like the LBD, the LBS can be easily updated/trendy with the right accessories.

Uma Thurman in her simple yet elegant black suit at a recent movie screening.

10. The Clutch: as far as handbags go, the clutch is very versatile and will always remain in style as it is the bag of choice for a big event. It’s also come into its own as a more casual bag—see below for a few different ways to wear it.

Carrie is a big fan of the clutch

Olivia Palermo with an Hermes 'Jige' clutch.  (This frigid bitch knows how to dress)

Bottega Veneta clutch on Kidman

Eva Mendes looking hot, even in a frumpy Moo Moo.

Her Madgesty and her spawn with their clutches by Marc Jacobs

Yes, I'll always find a way to fit Madonna into every, single post.  I'm that obsessed.  :-P
