Black Dress Spillage

What's more classic and sophisticated than the Little Black Dress?
We all have one or two or twenty in our closets.  (if you don't, we're no longer friends)

It's hard to fuck up a black dress but I've seen it happen a few times.
Take for instance the amfAR event in Milan Italy today during Milan Fashion Week.
We have examples of how to do it and how not to do it.

Here we have (ridiculously) gorgeous yet a little trashy Nina Senicar in a low back/high-neck variation:

I guess after modeling glittery monokinis and other bad swimwear, girl needs to wash up a bit.
This variation in a black dress is probably the best, ever.  Très sexy.

Then we have how not to wear a black dress, courtesy of Sharon Stone:

Pictured here with Roberto Cavalli (they share the same love of tacky blacky and cosmetic surgery) in what would be a fashion 'Do' if she weren't spilling out of it.
You see, that's the thing about the black dress; you don't need to show too much tit - you're already sexy enough just showing up in a black dress.
Poor thing.  After 100 years in the red carpet business, this is still a mystery to her.

Her face (54 yrs old) is holding up well though, non?  I've always loved her brows - they're very underrated.
I'm sure she's had a ton of 'work' but she's not too plasticy yet.
Yet.

Oscars 2012: The Good..The Not So Bad..The Ugly

Each and every year, we anticipate the Oscars Red Carpet because really, it is the most important Red Carpet of the year.  It's always chock full of disasters.  Me likey.

Last night (clearly, while the Fashion Gods were sleeping) Hollywood's take on fashion descended onto the Kodak Theater...and television screens across the world.

The Ugly

Judy Greer in something that only can be described as useless pieces of fabric sewn together to create a useless dress.

She's lucky no one cares.

Some blond thing dating George Overrated Clooney (that's his full name, btw)
Wouldn't be a Red Carpet without a Marchesa Disaster.  They're so consistently bad, aren't they?

Everyone on E! Red Carpet last night was saying; 'oh, she's his Oscar!'.  Wanted to puke.  Mostly all over this fucking hideous excuse for a dress.
Can't wait till she's dumped.

Dorith Mous (overpaid, undernourished Supermodel)
Dorith Mous should know better.  But the bigger question here is; 'Who invited this?'

Viola Davis (love her, hate the dress)
Most of the cast from The Help needed some help last night.  Viola would have been on 'The Good' list if she knew how to control her 'girls'.  The dress is lovely but overall, those tits stole the show.  #sadface

Emma Stone (can take her or leave her..mostly leave her)
The dress was bad enough but throw in that pink makeup and you got yourself a whole lotta Ugly.

More proof that Young Hollywood knows shit all about fashion.  She looks like she was dressed by her Mother.

Sandra Bullock (don't love her, don't love the dress)
Marchesa saved the worst for last.  Sandy B in this frock is painful to look at.
That gold lame thing on that blond amazon thing was the first Marchesa Disaster to hit the Red Carpet.  This one came along quite a while later.  I was getting worried that there would only be one Marchesa Disaster this year.  But, then Sandy showed up.  Marchesa never disappoints.

The Not So Bad

Don't know who this is or who she's wearing and I can't be bothered to Google..sorry
I really want to hate this dress but I can't.

If she lost the fringe, I think she would be on every 'Best Dressed' list.  You never want your hair to compete with your dress.

Michelle Williams in LV

Great choice for her.  Personally, I wouldn't be caught dead in it but it suits her.

This one is growing on me...looks way better today for some reason.

Rooney Mara in Givenchy

She certainly looked better going than coming but I don't hate it.
She reminded me of a young Jennifer Connely last night.
She really should eat something, though.

Natalie Portman in Christian Dior

Interesting designer choice given what happened last year with Galliano going insane.
I guess she wanted to show that there are no hard feelings towards the house of Dior.

Not loving her in this but really, when you have a face like this, do you think she gives two shits about fashion?

#GORGEOUSNESS

Rose Byrne in Vivienne Westwood

I just love her so much, had to blog about her.  But, this look is neither here, nor there.

But, she was sporting a Bob to die for last night!  Loves me some good Bob.

The Good

UGGIE!  From The Artist.   What a cutie.

Cameron Diaz in Gucci
Sometimes, when she get's it right, it's magic.  Most times though, it's tragic.
Probably the worst actress of her generation but this dress makes up for that...a bit.
She tends to be good at accessorizing though and last night was no exception; she kept it simple and elegant.

Jessica Chastain in McQueen
This dress was too much for her but really, it is a glorious piece of craftsmanship.
I like her even more now for trying to pull off a McQueen this early on in her Red Carpet career.
But really, how much longer will we be caring about her?  She's about as exciting as unbuttered toast.

Gwyneth Paltrow in Tom Ford

Perfection

Berenice Bejo in Elie Saab

Gorgeous colour, gorgeous face.  Classic and elegant..and French.

Hated the braids, though.

Milla Jovovich in Elie Saab

Probably my fave last night.
When someone steps onto the Red Carpet and all you can say is 'oh my God' that's a pretty good sign that she knows her shit.  Milla's no fool.  She knows that Elie Saab rarely disappoints.

Final Note:
If you can find a picture of Angelina Jolie from last night that DID NOT include her right leg, I'll give you a million bucks.

2011 Golden Globes: Post Mortem

Can I just start with Ricky Gervais before I get into the red carpet results?

Not really sure what all the fuss is about as he was doing his job. That’s what comedians are supposed to do; make fun of everyone in the room so their comfort levels are thrown out the window.

Hollywood needs to get over itself.

With the help of Twitter, let’s recap last night’s red carpet.

Best

Claire Danes in pink Calvin Klein absolutely glowed last night. However, most Tweeters wanted to know who that strange woman in the cowgirl outfit was, mauling poor Claire as she got out of her seat.

Um, it’s the real Temple Grandin. Let’s just say that Twitter can sometimes be pop-culture-challenged.

Speaking of being pop-culture-challenged, I didn’t know who this person was but admired her dress. As it turns out, she was a nominee!

Ouch. I’ll get it right next year, promise.

Designer: Oscar de la Renta
A simple black dress, a chic chignon and a red lip: always a winning formula.

Kyra Sedgewick in Emilio Pucci looked stunning last night. Her dress flowed beautifully and gave her look a relaxed, fresh feeling. She was also one of the best accessorized women on the red carpet---check out her jewelry.
Love it all. Also, when will Hollywood starlets figure out that a simple chignon never, ever goes out of style? A+

Anne Hathaway in Armani Prive brought sexy back last night. HOT, HOT, HOT. However, she could have done something different with her hair---was a tad boring.

Maybe deep down I’m just a slut but I loved this dress on January Jones.
Hey, you’re only young and gorgeous once so flaunt it before gravity takes over.

The Best Green: And then there was Brangelina. They must loving showing up to red carpets, stealing everyone’s thunder. Angie wore the most beautiful green Versace dress, accented with sequins and a bold shoulder. Perfection.  Has a late 70’s Halston feel to it....

Worst

And then there was the Worst green: Catherine Zeta Jones in Monique l'Huillier

This one was easy: Natalie Portman in Viktor & Rolf

Tilda Swinton in Jil Sander. This so-called fashion icon failed last night. Don’t care that it’s Jil Sander, it’s not flattering at all. However, looks like many people liked this ‘look’.

To each their fashion own. I guess.

No surprises here: a Marchesa made it on the ‘Worst’ list

On the Fence

Leighton Meester in Burberry was elegant but just a little bit of a snooze fest. If you’re young, hot and gorgeous, you should dress like it.

Elizabeth Moss in Donna Karan: loving the colour, loving the hair but the bodice isn’t 100%. Looks a bit strange at the boobs. However, overall, she was ravishing last night.
Wonder what she uses on her skin…hmmm.

Most OTT

Another Marchesa disaster.
I’m sure this designer makes gorgeous dresses because I’ve seen them. Why are the celebs picking these monstrosities?

Honorable mention

Hideousness that somehow works a la Helena Bonham Carter. She’s nuts and gives me the impression that she really doesn’t give a shit.
Designer: Vivienne Westwood (but of course it is!)

Biggest disappointment of the night:
No Gwyneth Paltrow

She's Electric

What is it about Electric Blue?
Each time I see someone in this particular shade of blue, I'm immediatealy attracted to their look, no matter what.

And on the Red Carpet?  Forget about it.  The contrast is divine.

Last night, the cast of True Blood dusted off their fangs to walk the Red Carpet in celebration of Season 3--starting June 13th!  (it's about bloody time)

Anna Paquin in a stunnung Proenza Schouler dress....with very simple accessories.

Btw, if you're not watching this show, you're out of your mind.  It's one of the best shows on TV--hop to it.

SATC 2 Red Carpet Premiere: NYC, May 24, 2010

Well, it's finally here: SATC 2 will be released this Friday.
Tonight, in NYC, the world premiere of the film is kicking off with a Red Carpet event at Radio City Music Hall.

from left to right: Cynthia Nixon, SJP, Kim Catrall, Kristen Davis

People on the net are already hating on Kim Catrall's Naeen Khan gown.  Whatev.  She looks gorgeous--the gown has an incredible fit.

The ever-gorgeous Cynthia Nixon was wearing a scrumptious black gown by Carolina Herrera.

Kristen Davis chose a rather boring and predictable bubble gum pink dress by Jean Dessess

ho-hum

SJP's Valentino gown was a hit tonight. Great color, great cut, great movement. She worked it.  (ugh. That was difficult.  Not used to dishing out compliments on SJP)

Hard to believe this beautiful gown came out of that disastrous Valentino S/S 2010 line.
We blogged about it here:
Valentino Spring 2010 Couture

Now, for some comic-relief.
Ladies & Gentlemen, Liza Minnelli!

We forgive you, Liza.  <3
