The 2009 Golden Globe's Best & Worst

So, the Golden Globes are almost here.  I sometimes tune in and I sometimes don't.  It's not like the GG's are the Oscars.  For the Oscars I never miss.

Since Fashion Autopsy has decided to do some live blogging on Sunday night, let's look back at last year's hits and misses. 

This Hits:

Christina Hendricks looking juicy and gorgeous!  This Mad Men star is hot, hot, hot--even in simple black.

Olivia Wilde in Reema Acra.  The dress is lovely.  The hair looks like ass--she should have styled it instead of just rolling out of bed.

The tattoes are unfortunate but the rest is perfection. She's ridiculous.

I love everything about Mary-Louise Parker.  This Carlos Miele gown is the perfect cut and colour for her.  There was so much black last year, it was refreshing to see cobalt blue.

The Misses:

Renee Zellweger: a f*cking mess, from head to toe

Designer: Carolina Herrera

Hairstylist: someone out for revenge

Sigourney Weaver: frumpy and boring.  She's been doing this for how many years?  She should know better.

Designer: Donna Karan

JLo: when a bad dress happens to a beautiful woman.  It's a sin, really.

Designer responsible for this gold disaster: Marchesa

Drew Barrymore: hating herself for the colour choice and taking it out on her hair

Designer: Dior 

Hair: Magic Cuts and vodka

Glenn Close: giving up on fashion entirely

Designer: do you really give a sh*t?

We want to see some colour in 2010!

St. John Dumps Angie

Apparently, Angelina Jolie 'overshadowed' the St. John brand. 

Uh, really?  It took the brand three years to figure this out.

Here's a statement from the CEO:
"[Jolie] overshadowed the brand," said chief executive officer Glenn McMahon. "We wanted to make a clean break from actresses and steer away from blondes and cleanse the palette.

"We needed to show a modern point of view of St. John," McMahon added. "We have evolved."
"We wanted to make a clean break from actresses and steer away from blondes and cleanse the palette," he added.

Now, they're on to redheads as Angie has been replaced with someone who happens to be married to some Rock Star (shocking!  A model is married to a Rock Star?!?!?)  Whatever.
Like many luxury brands, St. John is trying to stay relevant.  Fashion Retail ain't easy, kids! 

Well, we can still enjoy Angie's gorgeousness--thanks to the wonders of the internet!

The Classics

To say fashion trends come and go quickly, is like saying the Pope is a little Catholic.
It’s not easy to stay on trend but it is easy to keep things fresh each season, even if you’re not participating in the latest (and sometimes stupid) trends.
How?
Keep those classic pieces.
And what is considered a ‘classic’ piece of clothing?
Something that looks good on you, no matter what the current trends are. Something that makes you feel like ‘you’ when you wear it. Something that makes you feel happy and confident. And more importantly, something that can mix well and support any trend that pops up.

The Classics:

1. The Little Black Dress: it’s pretty difficult to fuck up a black dress. Most of us look good in them,  provided the cut is right for our bodies. Don’t throw out your Little Black Dresses—you’ll always get use out of them as they are the best ‘go to’ dress when you’re in a bind.

2. Silk Scarves: if you’re one of the lucky gals that have Hermes scarves, don’t you EVER, EVER get rid of those little gems. (In my next blog, I’m going to demonstrate the many ways of wearing a scarf—you’ll be amazed at what you can do with them!)

3. The Trench Coat: this one won’t go out of style if you have one in a neutral colour. If you have one in herringbone or a floral print, you should hang on to those as well, if you’ve spent a lot on them. Those patterns/prints tend to pop back into fashion every couple of years.

4. Denim: a simple, bootcut or straight leg jean in a dark wash will never go out of style. Make sure the length is right for the type of shoe you’re wearing. I usually buy two pairs of jeans if I really like them so that I can wear them with my heels and my flats.

5. The Knee-length Skirt: never underestimate a well-made knee-length skirt. They will last you forever—especially if you have them in neutral colours. The pencil skirt is also becoming somewhat of a classic.

6. The Urban Shoe Myth: there’s a reason why Carrie went wild over the Manolo Blahnik Mary Janes: they are stylish & gorgeous and will work with just about anything in your closet.

I love the leopard ones. (Yes! Animal prints in small doses are always appropriate and classy)

7. The White Shirt: take care of your white shirts and they’ll last a lot longer. No matter what your age is, you can pull-off the white shirt. Pair it with jeans or your power suit and everything else in between and it adds freshness—immediately.

8. The Wide-Leg Trouser: Again, in a neutral colour and a good quality fabric, you can have your wide leg trousers forever. Sometimes they disappear from trends but only for a short time. Guaranteed: at least every other season, you’ll be able to wear your wide leg trousers.

9. The Little Black Suit: If you invest in a well-made suit that isn’t overly trendy, you will certainly be able to wear it forever and it will always look hot. Just make sure to take care of it. Black can fade so try to keep it as clean as possible so you don’t have to keep having it dry cleaned. Also, keep it covered in a garment bag to avoid the light, which can fade the fabric quickly.
Like the LBD, the LBS can be easily updated/trendy with the right accessories.

10. The Clutch: as far as handbags go, the clutch is very versatile and will always remain in style as it is the bag of choice for a big event. It’s also come into its own as a more casual bag—see below for a few different ways to wear it.

The Printing Press

Now that the new year is upon us, feeling eager about Spring is only natural.
At this time of year, depending on where you are in the world, your fashion thoughts will starting swinging towards freshness.
And what better defines Spring freshness than prints? 
From geometrics to florals, one the the key Spring 2010 trends is prints & patterns.

As usual, Diane Von Furstenberg ruled the Spring 2010 prints trend:

 

This Spring, adding prints will be easy--you're going to be seeing a ton of them in stores soon.
Be careful with mixing prints though, this is an art and not everyone is an artist.  It can be tricky.
If you're a print/pattern virgin, start small.  Mix a flowing, printed blouse with a pair of jeans or under your power suit for the office.

Don't forget the bottoms--you can add your prints in the form of a skirt or a pant.  I love this look from Salvatore Ferragamo.

  

  

Another easy way to try the trend is with a printed Spring jacket like the one below from Wunderkind.  You can throw a jacket like this over just about anything in your wardrobe.
